ASME SA192 Seamless Boiler Tubes for High-Pressure Service
Dinesh Tube India supplies ASTM A192 / ASME SA192 carbon steel tubes from Mumbai to boiler makers, power plants, sugar mills and maintenance contractors in India and abroad. A192 is the standard seamless low-carbon boiler tube for water walls, risers, downcomers and economisers in high-pressure water-tube boilers.
We supply A192 tubes from 12.7 to 177.8 mm (1/2" – 7") OD in minimum wall thickness, cut to length, with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate. IBR Form III-B certification is available for boilers in India. Send us your OD, minimum wall, length and quantity for a quote.
What Is ASTM A192 Tube?
ASTM A192/A192M is the standard specification for seamless carbon steel boiler tubes for high-pressure service. ASME adopts it unchanged as SA192 in Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section II, so A192 and SA192 tubes have the same chemistry and properties. The specification covers tubes of 1/2" to 7" (12.7–177.8 mm) OD with a minimum wall of 0.085" to 1.000" (2.2–25.4 mm). Unlike heat exchanger tubes, boiler tubes are ordered to minimum wall, so the wall is never thinner than the design value.
A192 is a low-carbon steel (0.06–0.18% C). That keeps the tube ductile, so it can be bent, expanded into drums and headers, and welded without preheat in most cases. Where a boiler needs higher strength or thinner walls, designers use the medium-carbon SA210 Grade A1 instead. General requirements for tolerances, testing and marking come from ASTM A450/A450M.

ASTM A192 Chemical Composition
Values in weight %. Heat analysis per ASTM A192.
ASTM A192 Mechanical Properties
Tensile requirements do not apply to tubes smaller than 3.2 mm (1/8") ID.
Heat Treatment & Testing
Hot-finished A192 tubes need no further heat treatment. Cold-drawn tubes are heat treated after the final draw at 900 °C (1650 °F) or higher, which restores ductility. Each lot is tested as required by A192 and A450:

SA192 vs SA210 A1, SA179 & SA178
SA192 and SA179 share the same chemistry, but SA192 is written for boiler service, covers sizes up to 7" OD and is ordered to minimum wall. For a full comparison of all grades, see our carbon steel tubes page.

ASTM A192 Tubes: FAQs
What is an ASTM A192 tube?
An ASTM A192 tube is a seamless, low-carbon steel tube made for boilers and superheaters in high-pressure service. The specification covers tubes from 1/2 in. to 7 in. (12.7–177.8 mm) OD with a minimum wall of 0.085 to 1.000 in. (2.2–25.4 mm). A192 tubes are used for water walls, risers, downcomers and economisers in water-tube boilers.
What is the difference between A192 and SA192?
ASTM A192 is the material standard; ASME SA192 is the same specification adopted in ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section II. The chemistry, properties and tests are the same. Boiler makers building to the ASME code order SA192 so the tubes carry the ASME marking and can be used in code calculations.
What is the difference between SA192 and SA210 A1?
Both are seamless boiler tubes. SA192 is low carbon (0.06–0.18% C) with a minimum tensile strength of 325 MPa. SA210 Grade A1 is medium carbon (0.27% C max) with a minimum tensile strength of 415 MPa, so it has higher allowable stress and allows thinner walls at the same pressure. SA210 A1 is often used for superheater and economiser tubes; SA192 for water walls and general boiler tubing.
Can SA179 tubes be used instead of SA192?
Sometimes, but only with the designer's approval. SA179 has the same low-carbon chemistry but is a heat exchanger tube limited to 3 in. OD, and it is not written for boiler service. A substitution has to be checked against the design code, wall thickness and size limits before it is accepted.
What is the equivalent of ASTM A192 material?
The nearest equivalents are EN 10216-2 P235GH, DIN 17175 St35.8, BS 3059 Part 2 Grade 360 and JIS G3461 STB340. These are close in chemistry and strength but not identical, so check them against the design code before substituting.
Are A192 boiler tubes available with IBR certification?
Yes. For boilers in India, we supply ASTM A192 / SA192 tubes with an IBR Form III-B certificate issued by the inspecting authority. State the IBR requirement in your enquiry, as inspection must be arranged before dispatch.
What sizes of A192 tubes do you supply?
We supply A192 / SA192 boiler tubes from 12.7 mm to 177.8 mm OD. Common sizes are 25.4, 31.75, 38.1, 44.45, 50.8, 63.5 and 76.2 mm OD with minimum walls from 2.6 to 5.6 mm. Tubes are supplied in random or cut lengths. Send your OD, minimum wall, length and quantity for a quote.
