General characteristics:
Carbon Steel Weld Neck Flanges are usually supplied in the normalized state. One can buy flanges in normalized and temper condition. These flanges are classified by having moderate strength and impact toughness. Mainly, carbon steel flanges are used where cold temperature services are required. These flanges are manufactured in the forming temperatures between 900 – 1200 degree C. To avoid scaling the marinate times should be kept less; also the furnace temperature should be controlled for sufficient time. The quenching process is considered after forming process followed by water.

Carbon flanges are known for their attractive properties such as high tensile strength, hardness resistance to wear and abrasion resistance. This depends on carbon composition. Other properties of the flange are good ductility, machinability, and toughness. These can be treated by the heat treatment process for high strength and getting magnetic nature. Other tests are intergranular corrosion test, flaring test, ultrasonic test, radiographic test, pitting corrosion test and visual inspection.
